At Icon Foods International, we’re proud to be a trusted African gluten-free grain supplier, Teff exporter, and ancient grain bulk supplier, bringing this versatile, non-GMO grain to kitchens and farms around the world.
Why Teff Matters — For People and Animals
Teff is a tiny cereal grain originally from Ethiopia and Eritrea, where it has been grown for thousands of years — as far back as 4000 to 1000 BCE! As the smallest grain in the world, Teff may be tiny, but it packs a huge nutritional punch.
Its grains can come in different colours, from red to ivory to dark brown, and it looks a bit like millet. Unlike many other grains, Teff flour is usually whole grain because its tiny size makes it difficult to remove the bran and germ during milling.
What Makes Teff So Nutritious?
Teff is naturally gluten-free, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to avoid gluten without sacrificing nutrition. It’s loaded with:
- Protein: About 11% protein, comparable to wheat and maize, and higher than rye or brown rice.
- Amino acids: Particularly rich in lysine, which supports energy conversion, lowers cholesterol, and helps your body absorb calcium.
- Dietary fibre: More fibre than many other grains, which supports gut health and helps prevent chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
- Minerals: Especially high in calcium and iron — one 100g serving of Teff bread offers about 45% of your daily iron needs!
Teff and Gut Health
Teff’s high fibre content, especially insoluble fibre, helps keep your digestive system running smoothly. This fibre acts as a prebiotic, feeding the healthy bacteria in your gut and promoting overall well-being.
Iron-Rich and Energy-Boosting
Iron is essential for carrying oxygen throughout your body, and Teff is a great natural source. Studies show Teff can help pregnant women and active individuals maintain healthy iron levels, supporting energy and vitality.
Teff for Livestock Feed
Teff isn’t just great for people — it’s also a superstar in animal nutrition. As a popular summer hay and grazing crop in South Africa, Teff offers high protein content (15-25%) and rapid growth, with two to three cuts possible each season. It’s easy to grow in a variety of soils and can be harvested quickly to preserve quality.
Plant Teff between September and November once the soil reaches 15°C.
Use about 15kg of seed per hectare, either broadcast or with a planter.
Harvest before the plant starts to lodge to maximise protein content.
Fertilise with potassium and nitrogen for the best yields.
